For Him- Pick Up Girls with a Wingwoman

This almost weeklong holiday presents a lot of possibilities for members of the opposite sex to meet up and have fun. It can still be daunting though for you guys to just go over to the ladies with a line. The traditional practice is to bring along a male buddy to be your wingman, someone who’ll ease the way for your entry, entertain the girls but still let you shine somehow. However, Shane Forbes, the owner of Wingwomen—a business based in New York City, found out that the best man for the job is a woman.

The service of renting a wingwoman is not yet available here in the Philippines but its principles can still be applied successfully. Actually, I’ve seen it done a couple of times in the club. (Of course, there might have been more but I wasn’t really paying attention.)

Why a wingwoman? First and foremost, a female will automatically seem less of a threat than a guy, making your target more receptive to her conversational gambit. And then, when your wingwoman casually introduces you as her friend, there’s an underlying message that you’re the kind of guy whom the girls can turn to, i.e., you have a certain cache of gentlemanly manners, which will make you more attractive.

Where can you get a wingwoman? Here comes the sticky part. Ideally, you should have one or two female friends who are willing to help you by going out with you in a “no strings attached” way, as in, your relationship needs to have been already established to be platonic and on a “just friends” level.

Your wingwoman just can’t be any “girlfriend” either. They need to have enough interpersonal skills and gumption to strike up a conversation with a total stranger, otherwise, it won’t work.

Of course, you have to provide the food and drinks for the whole night. And it would really help if your wingwoman has her own mode of transportation so that she can exit gracefully once her mission is accomplished (You and your newfound friend may want to go out for coffee and whatever). If that’s not possible, then you have to content yourself with getting phone numbers and following them up later.

What will your wingwoman say? Laura Leu, a female writer for Stuff magazine posed as an undercover wingwoman to find out what it was like. Before her first assignment, she met up with other wingwomen to prepare herself.

Their advice included using lines as traditional as, “Haven’t I met you somewhere before?” to offering a compliment. I like the latter because everybody feels good when they’re complimented, and it immediately makes them warm up to you. But the conversational opening and the ensuing talk are really dependent on the personality, character and background of your wingwoman.

But the main thing your wingwoman and you need to work out are your visual and verbal signals as to when you can come in, when she can ease off and leave you two alone, etc.
