Tips to Avoid Rape
Posted by Saucy Sexy on July 22nd, 2005 filed in In Sexy Shape |Admonitions of “Baka ma-rape ka,” and other statements that run along the same vein, can be quite daunting. However, Karen Vertido, a survivor of rape, has these words of advice.
1. Listen and trust your instincts. Even though we’re all gifted with instincts, a lot of us ignore what our instincts are telling us, often in favor of a more logical type of thinking.
In her case, for example, Karen noticed that her would be attacker kept glancing at her throughout a long business meeting. Although she noted that that the glances had overtones of lust, she decided to ignore them, as well as the overt flirting he would do during the breaks.
She thought that since she was a lady in her 40s, a successful businesswoman, the Executive Director of Davao’s Chamber of Commerce, plus, the gentleman in question was a prominent Davao businessman who was a past president of the very same Chamber of Commerce where she was currently employed, it seemed very unlikely that she would be a victim of rape.
So when the meeting ended at about 2am and her would be rapist offered her a ride home, she thought that it would be safer to go home with him than to take a cab. Unfortunately, these assumptions, together with a sheltered upbringing from very protective parents, did not prepare her for the horrors to come. Trapped in the car, her assailant forced her into a motel room where he raped her.
2. Be alert. This might seem a very easy thing to do, but, unfortunately, the senses can be easily dulled by something as simple as drinking in a party.
Lulu,* a medical school student with honors, was studying in one of the top medical schools in the country and was just a step away from being an intern. When she was invited by an upper class man to attend a party to celebrate the end of exams, she felt she couldn’t refuse. Upon arriving in the hospital ward where the party was being held, it was to find the party in full swing.
The most popular activity that the partygoers were enjoying was drinking tequila body shots. Unfamiliar with tequila’s potent effects, Lulu soon became very drunk after just a couple of drinks. The Chief Resident, Matt,* acted very concerned about her condition and offered to drive her home. She was able to give directions to her apartment, but she was still feeling the tequila’s effects so she accepted his offer to bring her to her very door.
Feigning worry about her condition, Matt insisted on bringing her into her own apartment right into her bedroom where he raped her. She was semi-conscious during the whole ordeal, and she remembered that she kept saying “No,” but her physical responses were so dulled by the tequila that she couldn’t fend him off. The next morning, she found herself naked on her own bed, alone and with the certainty that she had just been raped.
Unable to bear the thought of going back to school and facing her attacker, she opted to give up her plans of being a doctor and looked for a job overseas.
