Family Planning by Nuns and DKT

DKT GroupIt is shocking to learn that a majority of Filipino women still do not know the mechanics of how they get pregnant. Sure, they know when they have sexual intercourse it might result in a baby, but the fact that it’s the sperm meeting the egg in the fallopian tube, and the fertilized egg moves into the uterus, etc. is still unknown to a lot of them.

What is so ironic is that my friend, who is a nun, and, consequently, has vowed chastity, found herself forced to discuss the sexual process to help in the church’s efforts to encourage Filipinos to implement family planning through the natural or rhythm method.

Actually, the objective was to cut down malnutrition among the children, but since having too many children was a factor, discussing family planning was an indirect result.

DKT Lecture on How to Put a Condom ProperlyRecently, I taught a small group of DKT (a NGO promoting contraceptives and family planning) employees to help them find ways to improve their affectivity in disseminating information regarding the different methods of artificial methods of pregnancy prevention such as condoms and pills.

The time I spent with my nun friend while she went around during her routine check-ups on the children helped me in understanding the nature of DKT’s objective, and the circumstances they will find themselves in, such as lecturing under a tree, in a cramped barangay hall or in the middle of a street.

DKT has its own specially designed vans, complete with video and audio equipment, a small sari-sari store and generator as they go all over the country doing lectures in cooperation with the Department of Health. They will be starting a new series of lectures this March.

So what may seem disparate organizations at first glance actually share one common goal– family planning. It is only in the means by which the objective is achieved that they diverge in—the Catholic Church promotes natural methods while DKT promotes artificial methods.

I see that sister has her own ummm… visual aid.

Not only that, but it’s a cleverly disguised visual aid! At first glance, it looks like a banana. And then you pull the peel off. And, voila! It’s a… Hehe… Lorna ;-)
