What to Look for In Lubricants

Condom Compatible- One of the major concerns with the choice of lubricants is whether it will work with condoms. The following are phrases to look for on the label. An example is the phrase “Condom Compatible.”

Will Not Harm Latex- Since the ingredient latex can be found in most condoms, another phrase to look for is “Will Not Harm Latex.”

BFAD Approved and Water Based- I think BFAD stands for Bureau of Food and Drug Administration. But more importantly, you should be able to discern the phrase “Water Based.”

Water Based- The most simple of all the phrases, “Water Based” implies that the lubricant will not damage the condom, unlike oil-based lubricants.

I would like to thank DKT (a NGO promoting contraceptives and family planning), and the Bare Essentials staff, with their help and expertise.
