Sniggers — Let’s Hook Up

A friend was invited to lecture at a fitness convention in Hongkong where other international presenters were expected to join. Since she lectured about Partner Yoga, she had another fitness instructor with her to help her out.

Near the tail end of the fitness convention, my friend enthusiastically went around meeting the other presenters and giving out her calling card as well as getting theirs. She usually ended each conversation with, “Michelle (not her real name) will hook up with you later,” as her way of saying that her yoga partner will be emailing them and keeping in touch.

She got some odd looks but seeing nothing wrong, she let it pass.

To her chagrin, she found out later that aside from meaning to get together, the phrase “hook up” can mean that two people are going to have sex, and my friend burst out laughing with the thought that she was acting like some kind of pimp when she kept saying that her yoga partner will hook up with them. And the notion became even funnier when she remembered that some of the presenters are female (straight) or male (gay).
