True Love Waits

I first met the True Love Waits concept from a male cousin who was very pleased that he and his partner were able to fulfill their promise to stay virgins until their wedding.

Then, I was able to watch a show at the Greenhills Christian Fellowship Center with the True Love Waits concept and saw some interesting ideas.

Basic Concept LifeWay, the sponsor of True Love Waits, exhorts sexual purity, which it clarifies as “saying no to sexual intercourse, oral sex, and even sexual touching. It means saying no to a physical relationship that causes you to be “turned on” sexually. It means not looking at pornography or pictures that feed sexual thoughts.”

With married partners, sexual purity “means being completely faithful to your spouse in thought and deed.”

Biblical Basis The sexual purity concept is based on the fact that one is not supposed to commit adultery. Therefore, “being sexually pure means not even dwelling on thoughts of sex with someone other than a spouse.”

Romantic or Archaic? The sexual purity or True Love Waits concepts can be romantic in the sense that one must believe strongly that one is destined to be with somebody, and all intimate acts must be reserved with that person.

In another sense, the sexual purity or True Love Waits concepts can be considered archaic as in belonging to another era.

However, even a semblance of the concept is being advised by modern day figures such as Greg Behrendt, the Sex and the City writer who coined the famous phrase, “He’s just not that into you.”

In an appearance in Oprah, Greg Behrendt told a female guest, “Make the guy wait for the sex so that he could get to know you better as a person. Besides, he’s going to keep coming back day after day if he was really into you.”

My Thoughts The great thing about the levels of freedom that both men and women are enjoying now is that it gives them a choice.

You may embrace or reject the True Love Waits concept in its entirety, or mix and match the ones that you think will work with your own beliefs and character.
