While an obscenity landmark case is brewing in the Philippines, a full scale debate is gathering force in Australia over nude photos of 12 and 13 year old girls, which have been seized by police in a dramatic sweep hours before the images were supposed to be exhibited in a show, despite the fact that the photos have already been reviewed and approved by government censors.
Nevertheless, The Independent reported that local police commander, Allan Sicard, said, “(I)t is likely that we will proceed to prosecution on the offence of publishing an indecent article under the Crimes Act.”
Australian Prime Minister Joins the Debate
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd declared the photos disgusting, infuriating the art world into protest, the most visible of which is well regarded magazine Art Monthly publishing its most recent issue with a nude pubescent girl.
Martyn Jolly of the Australian National University summed up the Australian art community’s sentiments, “We aren’t going to let politicians who are always wanting to jump on populous bandwagons dictate what we can and can’t show.”
