Dulaang UP Play Exposes Incest and Child Abuse

Internationally recognized director and playwright Dr. Anton Juan, Jr. has chosen to open the 2008 Dulaang UP season with a provocative look into the dredges of Manila’s abused children, and yet has imbued them with a beauty and poetry that makes it possible for the audience to be informed of the tragedies of their plight without getting mired in its depths.

Although the play focuses on the stories of two children, they are interspersed with tales that weave through the main story line. The first act focuses on the travails of a ten year old female street vendor who has dreams about the ‘devil’ at night.

As she lies on her side with her eyes shut tight, she tries to dismiss the initial exploratory fingers as the trail of a cockroach, but, finally, she can’t deny the actions of the man she refers to as the ‘devil’ as a curved figure of a man moves his hips in the familiar sexual motions. What makes it even more agonizing for her is the knowledge that her mother is aware of her predicament, but has chosen to close her own eyes to the situation.

The second act explores the reasons behind the massacre of a family, committed by a thirteen year old girl housemaid, driven to insanity by their abuse and inhumane treatment. In a rage, she stabs and slashes the members of the family until their blood and remains become a scene that will leave the police and neighbors aghast at her acts of violence.
