Should the Ex-Fiancee Return the Engagement Ring

The demand of reality star The Bachelor Matt Grant to his ex-fiancee Shayne Lamas to return the 2.85-carat Tacori platinum-and-diamond eternity ring that served as their engagement ring has caused everyone to titter.

The one thing that is not clear from the reports is who broke off the engagement. The answer will make it easier to determine what should be done. If it’s the lady, then she is custom bound to return the ring. However, if it’s the gentleman, then, customarily, he should allow the lady to keep the ring.

In this particular case, Matt Grant has been quoted by People Magazine protesting adamantly, “I never said it was cool to just keep [the ring]. If she said we spoke about it, she just made it up. Sometimes she thinks she can say anything and I’ll go along with it.”

Methinks that the gentleman was the one who called off the wedding, and is still vexed enough with his ex-fiancee to be peevish about how the ring should be disposed of. Matt Grant is of the opinion that the ring should be auctioned off and “have each donate their half of the proceeds to a favorite charity.”

Apparently, the thought of ex-fiancee Shayne Lamas enshrining the ring in a glass box like Cinderella’s “golden slipper” has The Bachelor bursting out, “Why hold onto it? What’s the point?”

What’s the point indeed? Is a ring worth all that time and trouble? Or is the ring a symbol of a foolish mistake that Matt Grant wishes to eradicate? Is it pride pushing him to prove his ex-fiancee is a liar?

Whatever the reason may be, the demand to return the ring will only lengthen the letting go process and will not allow him to move on. The best thing to do now is to walk away and put the whole matter behind him.
