Director’s Cut of Levi’s Jeans Ad Borders on Child Porn

You will probably never see director Fredrik Bond’s cut of a Levi’s jeans TV commercial from ad agency BBH/New York that’s suggestively titled — First Time.
Columnist Lewis Lazare from the Chicago Sun-Times related the director’s cut, “It shows two young kids staring intently into each other’s eyes. The girl is seen helping the very boyish-looking guy unbutton his jeans while they exchange hugely suggestive lines such as the girl’s remark that “nobody is good the first time” and the guy’s question, “Is it gonna hurt?” After what looks unmistakably like a prelude to some heated sexual encounter comes the big surprise twist. It turns out all the talk has really been about jumping off a pier together into the ocean.”
Chicago Sun-Times columnist Lewis Lazare described his reaction as “[it] smacked to us of borderline soft-core child porn.”
Ad agency BBH/New York responded with a revised cut that lessened the sexual innuendoes “a little.” and is now released worldwide, including the Philippines.
Sexually charged ads in the jeans industry are historically prevalent, with Calvin Klein leading the pack with provocative images and lines, such as the infamous 15-year-old Brooke Shields saying in a 1980 ad, “Nothing comes between me and my Calvins.”
As Calvin Klein continuously pushed the envelope between advertising and what critics considered as child porn, the debate culminated in a 1995 U.S. Justice Department investigation of whether Calvin Klein has violated child pornography laws, but not before increasing sales that resulted in Calvin Klein’s jeans becoming a coveted “‘must-have’ item of the season.”
