Madonna Provokes the Pope

While in Rome, Madonna did not do as the Romans do. Instead of reverence, Madonna deliberately tried to provoke a long time adversary, the powers at be of the Roman Catholic faith, by dedicating her earliest hit ‘Like A Virgin’ to the head of the Roman Catholic religion — the Pope — during the Rome leg of her Sticky and Sweet Concert Tour.

Reuters reported that the Material Girl announced, “I dedicate this song to the pope, because I’m a child of God. All of you are also children of God,” and then launched into the provocative lyrics of Like A Virgin — lyrics that allude to the Virgin Mary, virginity, love and sex.
