Cloverfield of Love

Cloverfield Theatrical PosterA monster attacks Manhattan.

The premise leaves me cold. However, since JJ Abrams, creator and producer of hit TV series Alias and Lost, is producing Cloverfield, I gave it a shot.

What has been touted as a monster horror film is more of a romantic film wherein the monster is just incidental.

Cloverfield is a love story.

And that’s why I’m putting it in the Saucy Sexy Stuff category instead of the Movie Mad Plus category, because there is one glaring advantage from watching this.

Hope that an indecisive hoped to be or current partner will watch it.

As another film character described him, Rob, the lead character, is a douche for not grabbing on to the girl that he loves, Beth, before leaving for Japan for a Vice-President job.

All things are crystallized for Rob when the monster hits the city, and he gets a call from Beth stating that she’s trapped and bleeding. The main motivation of the film is how Rob can get to Beth in order to save her.

Hopefully, your dense partner will have that moment of clarity himself/herself when he/she realizes how much you mean to him/her when the question is raised as to what he/she would do in the same situation.

What saves the film from being mundane is the creative decision for Cloverfield to be shot cinema verite style, thus, one will be strongly reminded of The Blair Witch Project.

Kudos to actor TJ Miller who plays Hud whose characterization is so clear, despite the fact that you rarely see him in the film since he’s the one supposedly carrying the camera and documenting the ensuing drama.

So if you’re hoping to get scared in a ‘I’m scared even after the movie’ way like The Sixth Sense, or be scared in a fun monsterrific way like the Aliens series (especially the first and second films), or be just a wee bit apprehensive like the romantic The Village, may I make the proclamation again Star Wars Master Yoda style, “Monster/horror film it’s not, but a romantic love story it is.”

But hey, it’s February, the love month… ;-)
